Message Your install is failing when it attempts to start the MainWin runtime because it can't find your system's architecture (i386, i686, sparc, ppc etc). 'Arch' is similar to 'uname -m' so an easy workaround is to create a script in /usr/local/bin:

#! /bin/sh
uname -m

Message I am having this same problem also (Kubuntu 8.04), so thanks for your help. However, how exactly do I create this script and then what do I need to do after creating it? Thanks again.

Message 1. In ubuntu: sudo gedit
In kubuntu: sudo kate

2. write in the file:
#! /bin/sh
uname -m

3. Save as...
save it to folder:
/usr/local/bin/
the filename is:
arch

Message It appears that you need to install C shell or one of its successors for that particular script to run. Personally, I'd recommend tcsh because it provides the same function as csh but includes things like command line completion and editing.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install csh or sudo apt-get install tcsh

Message After doing a little digging it turns out the problem lies with MainWin (the software used by Esri to emulate windows on linux) and the way it handles threads.
Create an environment variable called MWNO_RIT and set it to true

in bash - export MWNO_RIT=true
in csh/tcsh - setenv MWNO_RIT true

Message I am just now again trying to get ArcReader working. I now was able to install, but am having the same x crash as Tommi Kuljukka, even after using "export MWNO_RIT=true" at my bash terminal. Any other suggestions?

Message I am also having problems on Ubuntu 8.10.
I created the arch script, set the shell to tcsh and changed the MWNO_RIT variable.

Now, the error message I am getting is:
"Failed to start Core Services: Failed to launch rpcss."

Thanks in advance for the help.

Message I having the similar problem on Ubuntu 8.04 (amd64):

After the installation I get the error concerning arch and csh. I have solved it in the way it is described... then I got the message that the ArcReader is not installed properly. I have reinstalled it...

When I start now the ./arcreader I see for a moment the ArcReader start screen and then I get the message "Aborted"...

The only thing I've found yet was a CheckForRegistrationErrors in the ArcReader_InstallLog.log...

Has anyone else this problem?

Best regards
Valentin
