Subject Server could not authenticate the supplied identity
Author James Samek
Date Sep 12, 2007
Message When I type "http://machinename/ArcGIS/services" in the browser on the server running ArcGIS Server 9.2, I get the following error:

Server Error in '/ArcGIS/services' Application.

Identity Error: Server could not authenticate the supplied identity.

I also get a generic server error message when trying to connect through Arc Catalog.

I am using the arcgiswebservices user to connect and that user is a member of both the agsusers and agsamdin groups.

I cannot create an Internet connection using the map resource definition editor. I can create a local connection, but only if I add "Everyone" to the agsusers and agsadmin groups.

Any ideas?

Message this is a permission issue, we came around this by creating a separate user name with admin privileges on the local box only and added that user to the agsuser and agsadmin group.
this way you do not have to add everyone to your ags groups when using a local connection.

hope this helps

Message We had this same problems and we tried deleting the SOC, SOM and ArcGISWebservices account and rerun the post installs without any success. An ESRI tech did give a solution that worked.

Find the application located in Program Files\ArcGIS\DotNet\AddInstance.exe. He first had me make an instance called Test (SOM value is just the server name). Once it worked you could go to Start>Programs>ArcGIS Manager for the .NET Framework and there should be a new link to the test instance that was just created.

When tested our web applications we no longer got the error so we went back in to AddInstance.exe. Click the Modify and deleted both the test and ArcGIS. Then clicked add and recreated ArcGIS and everything worked.

Message Thanks Allan,
I had the same problem, the solution you mentioned got it working again. By the way, any idea on the reason?

Cheers,

Message Thanks this solved my problem as well. I think that in my instance it had to do with a hard reboot after my server was unresponsive.

Message Seems like there are so many different ways to resolve an ESRI issue. We ran into the same error when attempting to use the Mobile Extractor (Extract a mobile data access service via AGS 9.2 into BIN files). By the way there was a another thread on this issue (http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=158&f=2276&t=243677 ) but i figure i will copy the message below for those who experience the same problem.

Issue: Identity Error: Server could not authenticate the supplied identity

Solution (assumption person has Admin rights):
1. Stop the ArcGIS Server Object Manager service in the Administrative Tools-->Services

2. Open the Computer Management tool and deleted the ArcGISWebServices account from users (Right click My Computer-->Manage-->Local Users and Groups-->Users)

3. Start the ArcGIS Server Object Manager service in the Administrative Tools-->Services

4. Re-ran (this is the second time this problem occurred) the Web Post Installation (Start-->Programs-->ArcGIS-->ArcGIS Server for the .NET Framework-->Web Applications Post Install)

5. Stepped through wizard and recreated the ArcGISWebServices local account

6. Added the ArcGISWebServices account to the agsadmin and agsusers groups in the Computer Management tool (Right click my computer-->manage-->Local Users & Groups-->Groups)

7. Opened IE and typed in http://gisweb1/arcgis/services?wsdl and the XML appeared - note this is the name of our AGS.

8. Clicked the connect button in the Mobile Cache Manager and the map was visible along with all the layers

Keep in mind, it is good to extract the mobile cache data in C:\arcgisserver\arcgiscache\Extractor_MapCache

At this point, we still don't know what causes this problem. One thought is that when Network Administrators have to push out Security Patches that impact Group Policies might explain it but we still do not know what causes it but the procedures above work for us

Message Ran into this issue, and after several post-install re-runs that did nothing, the fix ended up being adding the ArcGISWebServices account to the local administrators group.
