Message This is a big deal for me, since I will be building and testing a prototype SDE 9.2 system soon.

I presumed v9.2 of GDBT had already been released; or at the very least, that the current release of GDBT would work just fine against SDE 9.2; perhaps sans a few bells and whistles.

Will the current release of GDBT *not work at all* against SDE 9.2? GDBT was going to be my chief, but not only, testing tool...

Message On behalf of ESRI, I apologize for the delay in the release of the GDBT extension for ArcGIS 9.2.

We are actively working on it and intend to release it soon - new estimated release date is mid-April.

Dana - In regards to your question, the current release of the GDBT for ArcGIS 9.1 will work on 9.2, but some of the functionality may not work correctly.

Hope this helps,
Derek Law

Message Thanks Derek.

Do you, or does anyone here, know specifically what functionality doesn't work with the current GDBT on ArcGIS 9.2? It'll be a moot point soon, but my testing may start before the new release date.

Thanks again.

Message Derek,

I downloaded and installed the 9.2 version. When attempting to test it out on an SDE 9.2 connection (SQL Server 2005), I get the attached errors from the GDBT tab in 9.2 Catalog.

The .NET Framework 2.0 is installed.

BTW, the install ran fine and produced no errors.

Message Hi Ron,
1) The error you are getting for the "statistics and indexes" tool is expected behavior, b'c this function is only supported for Oracle-based ArcSDE geodatabases.

2) As for the other 2 errors (spatial index and version information), this behavior is also expected. Since you only have .NET 2.0 installed, you are missing a file needed to run these functions.

In the enclosed readme file in the download:
----------------------------------------------
Step 3. If you only have Microsoft .NET 2.0 runtime, then you will also need to obtain the following file:

> mschrt20.ocx

Which is freely available from the internet (Google: mschrt20.ocx download).

Step 4. Place mschrt20.ocx in the following directory: C:\Program Files\GDBT\GDBT_ArcCatalog, then register the file.

Hope this helps,
Derek Law

Message Derek,

Could the error reported for Statistics and Indexes be a little more informative, so the user knows why they are receiving the error? And, I must ask, why is it only supported for Oracle? MSSQL has stats and indexes as well, no? Or, does it, in fact, refer to something different than I'm familiar in MSSQL?

I also have .NET 1.1 Framework on the machine. Should the mschrt20.ocx file have been installed with that? I just saw the reference to mschrt20.ocx in the readme file, so I'll download it, but I was curious what other package would have it installed automatically. Would .NET 1.1 do it? Some other package? Since you indicate that .Net 2.0 is required for the add-in on the Download page, could you also put that 'other' package on there as well, or mschrt20.ocx itself?

I realize that that's where the readme file comes in, but when I saw the .NET 2.0 requirement on the Download page, I thought I was set for prerequisites for the install. Just my experience, others may interpret it differently.

Thanks,

Ron

Message In hindsight, Derek, the Oracle error does indeed tell you the function is only available for Oracle, as part of the text, but why plug that string of integers at the begining, even if they are part of a trace values, etc?

Message Hi Ron,
Q1) Why is it (the statistics and indexes function) only supported for Oracle?
A1) The GDBT started out as a sample solution for an Oracle-based ArcSDE geodatabase. There hasn't been a lot of demand for this function on other DBMSs, but we'll consider your suggestion at a future release of the GDBT.

Q2) The Oracle error does indeed tell you the function is only available for Oracle, as part of the text, but why plug that string of integers at the begining, even if they are part of a trace values, etc?
A2) We will enhance the error message dialog at a future release of the GDBT.

Q3) I also have .NET 1.1 Framework on the machine. Should the mschrt20.ocx file have been installed with that?
A3) No, the mschrt20.ocx file is not part of any .NET Framework install.

Q4) What other package would have it installed automatically?
A4) I believe the mschrt20.ocx file gets installed with MS Developer Studio.

Hope this helps,
Derek Law

Message I'm having some trouble with the latest Geodatabase Toolset 9.2 -- this is running against ArcSDE Personal (for testing purposes):

1) When selecting "GDBT Scriptgen", and checking various options, clicking "Append" generates nothing at all (going into Detailed Task View, I see no statements were generated, unlike with other script Types, e.g. "Display Generator", etc). And Saving gives a blank text file as well.

2) When choosing script Type "Display Generator" or "Random Generator", there's no option for think time. Tried to add a THINKING_TIME=5 myself (seems to be the correct syntax), but it didn't do anything. Was it intentional to leave out a think time option?

3) I selected a think time of 5 seconds with another script type that allows think time and successfully generates statements after append. However, the think time value seems not to be honored -- unless the unit is milliseconds or nanoseconds. Doesn't seem to be milliseconds.

4) The "Reset" button, for clearing out the test code, seems to work only intermittently--or doesn't work at all for code generated by certain script Type tasks. Not a huge deal, because I'd just select/create a New script to clear things out.

Looks like a great tool, but it's of limited use to me for testing if I can't use the think time parameter.

Anyone else having these issues, or is it user error on my part?

Message Hi Dana,
Thank you for your efforts in identifying several bugs with the recent release of the GDBT for ArcGIS 9.2. We have corrected the errors and posted a new release of the GDBT for ArcGIS 9.2 on the GDBT download page:

http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/extensions/gdbt/download.html

We recommend that everyone who had downloaded the previous release of the GDBT for ArcGIS 9.2, uninstall that version and install this new build. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In response to your questions/comments in your post:

A1) The "GDBT Scriptgen" task is not suppose to be part of the install - it has been removed from the new GDBT build.

A2) The "Random Generator" task is also not suppose to be part of the install - it has been removed from the new GDBT build. Yes, we left out the thinking time for the "Display Generator" task on purpose.

A3) The think time should be in seconds. Can you re-check your testing?

A4) This may be a bug, we will try and look into this.

Hope this helps,
Derek Law

Thanks Derek. I appreciate your help.

May I ask why? As I understand it, think time allows one to model interactive "real" GIS users. Without think time, one seems limited to modeling batch processes only. That's my interpretation from reading System Design Strategies.

Will do. Thanks again.

Message I can create random and fixed display scripts that play back correctly, but get errors when trying to do a Create New Features script.

Here's the error:

"09:24:52 - Featureclass=NC1.DBO.Roads_WakeDurOrange_EDIT
09:24:52 - GDBCoreEdit.IGDBTEST_ExecuteCMD ERROR: [-2147467259-Could not find file 'D:\1-dana\1-ArcMap92-Test\NC1.DBO'.] in [Featureclass]

09:24:52 - FWkspace is something"

Since the target feature class is an ArcSDE Personal connection, I'm not sure why GDBT is looking for a file on my D: drive (I'm connecting to an SDE personal GDB on a remote PC).

The FC is registered as versioned, and I verified that I could manually make edits to the FC from the same ArcMap instance I'm running GDBT in.

I'm also a little confused about the options listed for Create New Features. There's an A. section where one is prompted for a number of features to create, then a B. section which has a scale and a count. Are these mutually exclusive or do they work together. Then there's the optional map cache.

I'm also unable to run an Update Features script successfully. Getting workspace errors:

11:53:49 - EditCache=1906627.15,290689.696989798;2235468.85,1262114.92301021

Message Not sure what the issue was, but I tried a new MXD and used a "Database Server" connection rather than a "Database Connections > Add Spatial Database Connection" (to add my feature classes) and it worked this time without errors.

I recall reading something in the SDE Personal docs that what one is able to do depends on how one logs in. That may or may not be it.

Message Discovered that with the latest build of GBDT 92, by manually adding THINKING_TIME=seconds to a fixed or random display script, this parameter is honored during script runs. Has to be in the correct spot though.

Without this capability, it seems one can only model batch processes rather than interactive GIS users.

Here's an example of adding think time to a random display script:

...
DSP_MAPSCALE=100000
DSP_MAP_AOI=1906627.15,447019.75;2235468.85,1105784.87
THINKING_TIME=4
DSP_RANDOMEXTENTS=3
DSP_MAPSCALE=50000
DSP_MAP_AOI=2057853.56,749970.02;2084242.44,802834.60
THINKING_TIME=2
DSP_RANDOMEXTENTS=3
DSP_MAPSCALE=10000
DSP_MAP_AOI=2064450.78,763186.16;2077645.22,789618.46
THINKING_TIME=1
DSP_RANDOMEXTENTS=3

Note that THINKING_TIME needs to appear immediately before each DSP_RANDOMEXTENTS statement.

Hope this helps anyone out there using this tool.

Incidentally, do named versions work for ArcSDE Personal? I recall reading somewhere that they do not. My own experience has been mixed. Seems to work sometimes and not others.

Q1) I'm also a little confused about the options listed for Create New Features. There's an A. section where one is prompted for a number of features to create, then a B. section which has a scale and a count. Are these mutually exclusive or do they work together?
A1) These options are not the same. Section A. creates features within the current extent (n x n features where n=count) and section B. uses random extents with a certain scale and selects features within the extents.

Q2) Do named versions work for ArcSDE Personal?
A2) Yes, versions are supported in Personal ArcSDE geodatabases.

As you mentioned in your last post, I would ask all users to please use the GDBT discussion forum for future questions on this extension.

Hope this helps,

Message Hi, Dear All,

I read the post, but I still can not make the GDBT work.

1. I installed MS .NET framework runtime 2.0.
2. I downloaded the GDBT 9.2, unzipped it, and ran the .exe
3. I downloaded and put the mschrt20.ocx in the following directory: C:\Program Files\GDBT\GDBT_ArcCatalog

But i do not know what "register the file" means? is this the problem?

Thanks for your help in advance. Appreciate any reply!
