Message With the Javascript API, you have more freedom for your development environment. You can use Notepad (or any text editor), Aptana, or any other Javascript IDE. You can create your own code using the objects and methods in the API library, however there are plenty of samples online.

For more information, check these resources.

ArcGIS Sample servers:
http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services
http://sampleserver2.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services -This just has geoprocessing services
http://server.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services - this is the big one with many useful background services

Javascript samples and code:
http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/javascript/arcgis/help/jssamples_start.htm Each book deals with a portion of the API and has samples relating to it.
