Message Hi, I've tried to solve this on my own and have searched the forum but no luck so I ask your help. I'm not a programmer but I'm having fun trying to customize the Flex API sample and I'm trying to bring in other RSS feeds. I was able to replicate the earthquakes example but when I try to add a different feed, I just get errors. I realize most feeds are RSS not GeoRSS so I looked at a rss to GeoRSS converter and tried it, but it didn't work either.

Specifically I'd like to get the RSS feeds from the CDC on Swine flu or Do an RSS feed from NWS on weather warnings. I've tried just adding the RSS and tried the converter but like I said, just errors. I created a GeoRSSWidget2.xml from the original and added a line in the config.xml calling the new widget. I'd really love to do something besides earthquakes, HELP!

My next thing is to try WMS services, I saw there was a sample on that, so maybe I'll move on to that until I get some answers on this.

thanks!

this is the URL from the RSS to GeoRSS converter for the CDC feed after I converted

Message Andrew,

The Swine flu feed that you are attempting to use is not one that you will get to work as it is a feed of podcasts and the georss converter is looking in the feed for geonames like San Francisco Calafornia, which do not exsist in these feed. You need to try someting like http://www.weather.gov/alerts/us.rss. Run http://www.weather.gov/alerts/us.rss throught the Georss and then you will be ok.

Message Robert,

Thank you for the quick reply! The NWS feed worked. I guess I need to only look for those feeds with placenames and avoid podcast feeds. I saw that the Geospatial One Stop is supposed to have georss feeds but I couldn't figure out how to get feeds from it. Any suggestions about that?

Message Andrew,

All I found on the Geo One Stop was that they are allowing data providers to add data as GeoRSS. The only results that I found in GeoRSS is two tests that ESRI put on Geo One Stop.

Message Glen and Robert,

I am using the slightly modified "georsswidget.mxml" Glen posted in May. I added the NWS feed, but not all feed records came through, still only Alaska. Is there a setting for the number of records returned by a RSS feed? Is this a common/old problem?

Also, is there a way to parse or query out titles the include the term "Short Term Forecast"?

Any help would be appreciated. . . Thanks in advance.

Message One reason in fails is because some of the RSS items do not have locations, after Geonames does it thing. I modified the GeoRSSWidget.mxml to skip those items and now feeds like the cdc one loads, with only item though. :)

if ( geometry != null ) {
	                var point:MapPoint = getGeomCenter(geometry);

.....}

Message Glenn, I am interested in your GeoRSS.mxml configuration. Would you mind posting the whole file?
Thanks,

Message Robert Scheitlin answered my question Nov 25, 2009, on the "rssToGeoRSS Problem" thread:

"The problem is the GeoNames rss-to-georss-converter. There is an upper limit of 20 entries for performance reasons. http://www.geonames.org/rss-to-georss-converter.html. I really don't have any suggestions on how to get past this limit either, I just thought you would want to know the reason."

I just wanted to close the loop on bothh threads. Thanks again Robert.
