Subject HELP!!!!! Can not start ArcSDE in unix

Message Hi all.

I am not able to start the ArcSDE service. I get the follwing message.

With this syntax :
- sdemon -o start
- or sdemon -o start -p password@database

I get this error message.

Please enter ArcSDE DBA password:
-------------------------------------------------------
ArcSDE 8.1 Oracle8i Build 832 Thu Mar 22 14:08:07 PST 2001
-------------------------------------------------------
init_DB DB_instance_open_as_dba: -51
DBMS error code: 1034
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27121: unable to determine size of shared memory segment
Compaq Tru64 UNIX Error: 13: Permission denied

Could not start ArcSDE -- Check Network, $SDEHOME disk, DBMS settings and dbinit
.sde.

-----------------------------------------------

I know that Oracle runs because I can run sqlplus. But to run SQLPLUS I need to enter the whole syntax, not the short one.

I am writting :
- sqlplus sde/password@database
- when we usually type: sqlplus password@database.

But if I write sqlplus password@database, I got the same error message.
Enter user-name: sde
Enter password:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27121: unable to determine size of shared memory segment
Compaq Tru64 UNIX Error: 13: Permission denied

PLEASE HELP.

Message I have the same problem trying to create a 10g database and ArcSDE 9.2 on a new server, say A.
I know I have correct environment parameters for oracle_home, nls_lang, tns_admin,ORACLE_BASE, SDEHOME, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and oracle_sid. The database is up and running, the database has got an entry in tnsnames.ora and with the help of the command "lnsrctl status" I can see that everything is OK. The OS user that owns the database, with dba and oinstall rights, is able to log on, but sde user, which has got dba and oinstall rights, is unable to log on when trying to log on with the command: sqlplus userid/password. It gives me:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27123: unable to attach to shared memory segment
SVR4 Error: 13: Permission denied
while sqlplus userid/password@database_name lets me to log on into the database.
I have a GEO-database running in Oracle 9i on another server, say B.
When I add the TWO_TASK parameter in my dbinit.sde or .profile for the sde user on server A, sqlplus userid/password logs on to the database running in Oracle 9i on the server B.
What should I do?
Regards,
Minoo

Message A "13" errno is usually an *OS* level permission error.
Make sure the directory and file permissions under both
ArcSDE and Oracle software homes are correct. All shared
libraries should have execute access for at least owner
and group.

Message Hi,
And thanks for the reply. But as I wrote,
sqlplus userid/password@database_name
works for the sde user. Does not SDE use the same directries and files to log on to the database when using sqlplus userid/password@database_name or sqlplus userid/password?
Regards,
Minoo

Message Like Vince says, sounds like a permissions problem.
