Subject Sharing violations-shema locks ArcMap ArcCatalog

Message I have been getting the error “Error exporting data. Cannot acquire a schema lock because of an existing lock” when trying to write to a file geodatabase. I did indeed have it open in ArcCatalog. I click to different file geodatabase and try again. I get the same message. In ArcCatalog, I click View-refresh, but I still get the error message when trying to write. If I go to the directory it is in and click View-refresh, I can finally write. However, if I go to different directory at the same level of the directory my file geodatabase is in, click View-refresh, I get the same error message.

Other than closing ArcCatalog, how does a user avoid sharing violations? It seems that selecting View-refresh doesn’t always work. At times I have even had to shut down ArcCatalog as I could not get the lock to release. Is there a sequence to release the locks?

Message If you have a file lock on a File Geodatabase, the lock is at the feature class level (as opposed to the ENTIRE geodatabase for Personal Geodatabases.) Right clicking the file geodatabase in ArcCatalog > View > Refresh is the recommended way of clearing locks.

If that doesnt work for you, or if anyone has reproducible steps where the geodatabase is not releasing locks in the way that it should, please post with the repro steps. I will be happy to look at it.

Message Today I was cleaning files off a maxtor drive trying to create space for a backup. I used ArcCatalog to see what was in the file geodatabase. I then used Windows Explorer to delete the entire directory including the file geodatabase. I had first clicked in another directory in ArcCatalog. Windows explorer returned Error Deleting File or Folder(see attached file). I then changed to the c: drive and did a refresh from ArcCatalog. I got the same error message. I closed ArcCatalog and then could delete the directory which included the file geodatabase. After rereading your reply, it seems you are saying I should click on the file geodatabase and refresh. I tried that on a different file geodatabase and got a different file sharing violation (see attached filelockerrorWExplorer2).

I also noticed that ArcCatalog had changed the date on the file geodatabase even though nothing had been written to it. I had only previewed the data using arccatalog. I have the option to update metadata turned off.
