Message Has anyone tried geocoding in 9.3 yet? I have geocoded an Excel file and the initial geocode went just fine, in fact I love the graphic showing the Matched, Tied & Unmatched. I also love the fact that the Pick Address tool is now included. However in the Interactive Rematch I'm finding some minor annoyances. First, in my list of candidates the top candidate shows up as a gray color, making me think it's selected. I click Match, but it does nothing because there is no candidate selected. I then click on the candidate only to have the gray disappear, but still no selected candidate. Click a second time to select, then I can click on Match. Second, Pick Address from Map - Although clicking on this tool switches focus to the map, the Geocoding dialogue box does not minimize so you have to drag it out of the way. The cursor changes, indicating that the tool is active, however you have to right click and choose Pick Address in order for the tool to work. I'd prefer to just be able to left click. And third, when the Rematch dialogue first comes up, I'd prefer to have the Show Results default to the Unmatched Addresses rather than All Addresses. Is there a way to change this default? Thoughts from anyone else on geocoding in 9.3?

Message Hi Kelly,

Good observations.

I tried reproducing your case. Although I wasn't able to reproduce it initially, I realized I could get that behavior while in an edit session. It seems that when the first address is either unmatched or matched after starting an edit session, the table view on the top of the dialog doesn't update.

Looking a little further, I noticed that the edits are actually made to the data, they just don't appear on the table. To observe this, you can match or unmatch a record, note that the table doesn't update, close the Interactive Rematch dialog box (save edits), and reopen it. The record will be correctly matched or unmatched. But clearly the table view should be fixed so it is updated properly.

As for your second point, I agree, it would be nice in most cases if the dialog box would minimize automatically. One work around, if you don't mind a smaller map display, is to adjust ArcMap so it covers say the top 2/3 of the screen and put the Interactive Rematch dialog below it. This way it never covers the map.

For point number 3: you can choose which result set (All Addresses, Unmatched...) will be displayed when the dialog box opens. To display Unmatched Addresses, open the Interactive Rematch dialog, click Manage result sets, select *Unmatched addresses, and click the up arrow button on the right until *Unmatched addresses is at the top of the list. Whatever is at the top of the list is displayed first.

Best,
Robert

Message I forgot to mention that there is a shortcut for picking addresses. You can point to a location, hold down the left mouse button, and press either Enter or the spacebar. This way you don't have to fiddle around with the context menu to pick an address.
