Message When I double-click an MXD in ArcCatalog, I'm getting the error message:

Active View Changed
Catastrophic Failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)) -2147418113

The MXD then opens fine. If I open ArcMap first then open the MXD the problem does not occur.

This occurs on multiple MXDs, but not every MXD. Let me know if you need any further info. I'm using beta build 1689, not RC.

Thanks,
Steve

Message From the description of your problem, the most likely suspects of your issue are:

1.) Some sort of data corruption. The offending layers might be the same FGDB features that you are getting schema locks on (from your other post). Or, perhaps there is a common base layer that is in all the problematic MXDs that is not in the MXDs that are opening fine. You could remove suspect layers, resave the MXD, and try and repro. You can also upload one of MXDs and I can take a look at it.

2.) A conflict with a third party applcation. Do you have any third party tools? If you could uninstall them for the sake of testing, that would be beneficial.

3.) Bypassing your system templates is alsways a good quick thing to try as well. With ArcGIS closed, rename the ESRI folder from this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Esri\

Rename it to something like ESRI_old. This will bypass all your templates. The ESRI folder will get recreated next time ArcGIS starts up. Try and reproduce the problem. If you have anything you want to save in this folder (tool boxes, templates, ArcMap settings, etc), after testing, you can delete the new ESRI folder, and rename ESRI_old back to ESRI.

If none of that works, it would be good to log a Support incident. If you do that, I'll take ownsership of the incident. We can then post the final answer to this thread.

Message Hi Jeff,

The weird thing is that the same MXD opens correctly if I open it from within ArcMap, rather than double-clicking it to open ArcMap - this would tend to indicate that it's not a problem with the data per se??? Also the fact that the error message mentions the active view changing, rather than the data?

But like you say, I'll keep an eye on it and try to find a reproducible case.

Cheers,
Steve
