Message Hello,

I have a grid theme from a USGS DEM file in my layer collection. I would like to show the grid over top of some tiff images.

The problem is the grid covers up the tiffs. I would like to have the grid set to transparent somehow. Is there any way to make a grid layer in ArcView partially transparent?

Message If the grid is being shown as a grid, it has a legend. Set appropriate legend colors to transparent. Otherwise, if it is being shown as an image, it might have a color table. Set some of its colors to transparent.

No technique will work for hardcopy, including pdf files: there is a well-known, long-established bug causing transparent colors to print as white. You can still trick AV into doing what you want by converting the tiff to a grid and then manipulating the two images with the map calculator. It's involved, but it works.

Message When you say transparent do you mean crystal clear transparent or partially transparent.

I would like partial transparency so the transparent layer is visible yet you can see the layers underneath.

Message ArcView does not support alpha transparency. The only way to implement partial transparency is through manipulation of grids.

Message Can any other ESRI products do partial transparency such as ArcINFO, ArcGIS?

I have the software available but I need to know which one to use.

Message ArcGIS (all flavours: ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo) can handle transparency of featurethemes and grids. Just add the toolbar 'Effects'
