Subject Using Image Catalog Across Network in Image Service
Author Michael Volz
Date Oct 24, 2008
Message To All ArcIMS Users:

I am trying to connect to an image catalog across the network to access sid images in an ArcIMS image service. I modified an axl file according to the instructions in the ArcXML_Programmer_Ref_Gd.pdf but I keep getting the error message:

[ERR0928] ImageServer on NYSIMSF01: Layer with ID 131 cannot be created. Dataset ic_data_year.dbf is missing, unknown type, or invalid.

Can an image catalog be accessed across the network? I was able to access a copy of this image catalog locally with the images stored locally, but I was never able to access the image catalog over the network. I tried both a mapped network drive path and a UNC path name but both failed.

Any help or hints on this subject are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message Michael,
Sorry for that late reply. Perhaps you have been able to move past this issue?

It's definitely possible to use an image catalog that references images somewhere else out on the network. Can you share with us your ArcXML? Specifically your IMAGEWORKSPACE definition and also the DATASET name for the actual image catalog?

Additionally, how are the images referenced in the image catalog itself? Are these local paths, mapped drives or UNC paths?

I hope this helps and is not too late.

Cheers,
Monte

Message Michael:

I have been able to access images in ArcIMS through an Image Catalog. The things to note are that in order to access the images, the paths in the image catalog had to be in UNC format not mapped drive format.

In addition, the ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor, and ArcIMS Tasker services all needed to be logged on as a network user and not the Local System account under Properties->LogOn.

I am currently struggling to get a color tif catalog added to my ArcIMS service. I have another color catalog working, but I can not seem to get another color tif catalog to work correctly.

If you should have any other suggestions on this topic it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message Michael,
That is good to hear that you made some progress. Can you elaborate on "I am currently struggling to get a color tif catalog added to my ArcIMS service. I have another color catalog working, but I can not seem to get another color tif catalog to work correctly."

I am assuming that you have already gone ahead and modified the paths in the catalog to UNC? Does the image catalog reside in the same location as the other image catalog? Could you share your .axl code?

Thanks,
Monte

The first 2 image catalogs, 1993 Aerial Imagery and 2000 Aerial Imagery, work fine. Its the 3rd set of imagery, 2005 Aerial Imagery, that is not working. One thing to note is that I had an image catalog of 2005 MrSID images working, but I cannot get the set of 2005 Tif images to work. One reason might be the huge size difference ~ 6.5 MB per MrSID image and ~ 130 MB per tif image.

Another thing to note is that there are 557 MrSID images and this many records in the image catalog while there are 556 tif images. I don't know if this could be causing the problem, but I just did a find and replace to the image path to switch between a 2005 MrSID image catalog and a 2005 tif image catalog.

Any feedback you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message Michael,
When you add the 2005 tif catalog and try to make a service, do you receive a timeout error or an error like your earlier one:

[ERR0928] ImageServer on NYSIMSF01: Layer with ID 131 cannot be created. Dataset ic_data_year.dbf is missing, unknown type, or invalid.

With that amount of data, it may take ArcIMS longer than 5 minutes to create a service. 5 minutes is the default amount of time for service creation. When users create services that references many layers or many image files, we sometimes need to increase the amount of time we give ArcIMS to create the service.

If I need to increase the amount of time for ArcIMS to create the service, where and what do I do to increase this time?

If there a setting in ArcIMS that I just need to change?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message Michael,
To change the timeout for ArcIMS, you need to modify the extendedtimeout paramater in the AppServer.properties file. This file is located in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\AppServer. Once you have the file open, search for the extendedtimeout paramater and change it from 300 to 900. Following this, a restart of the ArcIMS services is required.

All of this is pending a timeout message when you are trying to create your service. If you are receiving a different error message, please let us know.

Cheers,
Monte

I am not getting a timeout error message.

Here is the message that I am receiving:

"Layer with ID jai_ws-1 cannot be created. Check Spatial Server log files for errors.

[ERR0125] Error when trying to administer Service."/>
Do you have any idea what would be causing this error? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Message Michael,
That is one of our more vague error messages and signifies that service creation could be happening for any number of reasons.

I would encourage you to submit a Technical Support Request and one of our specialists can assist you.

Message Hi Michael,

I have .dbf with UNC path and it works fine. I have used the script from the forum and its good, but then I have to replace the drive: with UNC path.

I am just wondering, whether you have any performance issues with this .dbf catalog. I felt ArcSDE rasters rendered in less time when compared to .dbf network rasters.

Message Ram,
In the majority of situations, you'll see much better performance of ArcSDE raster catalogs (ArcSDE Raster in General) as compared to file based images across a network. This is primarily due to leveraging RDBMS functionality. The nature of the way the data is stored in the database cuts down on the amount of data sent across the network when compared to file based images. If you do have ArcSDE, I would recommended loading your raster data sets into the database.

I hope this helps.
