Message Chris,

You'll need to create either a Join or Relate. A Join can be used if there's a 1-1 relationship between the shapefile and database. A Relate should be used, if there's a 1-M relationship. To create a Join/Relate, you'll need a common relationship between both layers (ex. ID number)

Message Hey Chris,
Just a heads-up. If you use an earlier version of Excel, it may be prudent to save that file as .dbf. However, if at all possible export the excel data to Access before processing. Access and ArcMap harmonize well.
One last thing, make sure your excel and shapefile have a common field.
