Subject Creating a point shapefile from an excel spreadsheet

Message I was sent an excel file with the following fields
Location Number, Latitude, Longitude. The lat/long fields are in decimal degrees. I have added it as a table to an .mxd and I have tried to display the XY data but the fields in the dialog box are blank. I have tried exporting the file and it fails I even converted it to a .mdb file and that did not work.

How do I create a point shapefile from this spreadsheet using ArcView 9.3.1?

Thank you in advance

Dave

Can you post the spreadsheet?

Message Mark, here is a small sample of the spreadsheet, I cannot put the whole thing up because it is proprietary.

Thank you,

Message Your field type for the Latitude and Longitude fields are strings. To display XY data, your fields need to be numeric.
