Subject NAD83 CSRS conversion for British Columbia
Author Sarah North
Date Oct 02, 2006
Message I have received a file of geographic (lat/long) coordinates that I need to convert to UTM Zone 10 NAD83. The locations are in British Columbia, Canada. The data are in horizontal datum NAD83-CSRS.

When reprojecting the data in ArcToolbox, there is no datum transformation method listed that is applicable to NAD83-CSRS in BC. As far as I can tell, the CSRS methods listed are for other parts of Canada.

What is the appropriate datum transformation method to use?

I'm using ArcGIS 9.0 -- we have the more recent upgrades but haven't installed them yet. Is the BC NAD83-CSRS datum transformation method available in more recent versions of ArcGIS?

What degree of error would be introduced by treating the input data as regular NAD83 instead?

thanks,
sarah

Message Dan,
1. I am hoping she will... (no pressure, Melita) :-)
2. Could do, but the data still comes from BC.
3. Very accurate, I think, as it is a surveyed monument used for GPS reference.

Message Hi Sarah,

We don't have any BC transformations in 9.2. I would convert to NAD83-CSRS UTM zone 10N. http://www.geod.nrcan.gc.ca/faq_e.php says that the differences between the original and CSRS range from a few cm to a couple of meters.

Message If I ever find about any! The BC website only lists the NTv2 (NAD27-NAD83) software. I know some of the provinces haven't generated any type of transformations between NAD83 (original) and CSRS.

Message I have spent a frustrating day trying to find my way through this problem. At least I can provide an answer to where the CSRS grids are for B.C.:

There is a good discussion of the topic here:
