Message I am trying to convert northings and eastings to degrees minutes seconds. I have tried the suggestions in the forum but with no success. Does anyone know if there is a quick converter? Or very detailed step by step instructions using ArcMap or ArcCatalog? Thanks

Message What are you trying to accomplish with this conversion?

You can set up your View to display in degrees minutes seconds under View then Data Frame Properties and Units:Display.

You can reproject a shapefile from what you have into Decimal Degrees.

You can set up your entire map in Degree Minutes Seconds so that new coordinates you add in this manner will be put in the correct places.

I hope this helps,

Message Thank you for the reply. I worked with this yesterday before I received your suggestion and it did not work at all. This morning I tried it again and it worked just fine.

What we are trying to do is convert points collected with a GPS unit from lat/long to degrees/minutes/seconds for submitting to State agency, per their request. I need to be able to add the degrees/minutes/seconds of each point to the shapefile table to display it on the map as the label of the point. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Message Hi,
I have a similar problem.
I have collected data in decimal degrees, but when I enter it into arcgis, the points do not show up with the correct coordinates.
I was wondering how I enter decimal degree coordinates into arcgis so that the points are correct?
thanks

Message Hi,

Some things to watch for:

1. Longitude values are negative in the western hemisphere. Latitude values are negative in the southern hemisphere.

2. Longitude corresponds with x; latitude with y.

3. The values have to be doubles/decimals, not various display formats like DD MM SS.sss, DDMM.mmmm, DD.MMSSssss, etc.

What coordinates do you have, and what do they show up as in ArcMap?

Message Easy Calculate at www.ian-ko.com has a variety of field calculator expressions that you can use to get the coordinates in native units or the units of the data frame as well as converting to DMS etc

Message What Dan said. Or do yourself a favor and download the entire (free) ETGeowizards toolset from www.ian-ko.com. It includes tools for adding your new coordinates to the attribute table.
