Message I have a text file (tab delimited) with xy and attribute data that I am trying to add to ArcMap using "TOOLs" menu "ADD XY DATA" command. I can locate and add the text file to the dialog box but no fields show up in the drop down menus for selecting the field representing the xy coordinates. In the text file the coordinates are in a header row "x-coordinates" and "y-coordinates".

I have also tried using ArcToolbox to create a point coverage from the same table but keep getting error messages that my table does not have the minimium xy and id columns, which is not true.

I have also noticed that there is no option to convert a table of xy values into a shapefile in ArcToolbox like you can in ArcView (from a theme created using a text file of xy data.

Can anyone give me some insight into this problem? I am perplexed that something that should be easy is giving me so many difficulties. Are there other options? My goal is to interpolate a grid with this data with Spatial Analyst.

Attached is the text file I have been using.

Thanks

Message Problem's in the names of your fields. You have some illegal characters... Also, it's advisable to give files that are tab-separated a .tab suffix. I've attached a file named xydata.tab that has field names and data that were accepted using ArcMap's Tools>Add XY Data.

Message Craig,

I had the same problem with a .dbf file I was trying to generate points from. I tried several things without success. Then, I fired up the good'ol ArcView 3.2 and was able to add an event theme on my FIRST TRY!
I'm not sure if this has been filed as a bug, but it probably should. If you find out anything relating to this, please let me know!

Message Thanks to our GIS Coordinator, I gave up on the .txt file and instead saved the excel spreadsheet as a .dbf file. I then made sure all of the fields were assigned a format (select the entire column and right click to get to the format dialog/assignment). The xy coordinate fields must be numeric (I used two decimal places). I also noticed that attibutes need to be assigned an appropriate format. For example, before my well ids were assigned as text format, I could not label my points - nothing would appear in ArcMap. In ArcMap, the attribute table would show no value for Well ID even though the original dbf file contained an entry. This was the same for all the other atributes that did not have assigned formats This was fixed by making sure each field in the dbf file was asigned a format using excel.

Let me know if this works for you. This solved all of my similar problems in ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox related to conversion from a data table.

Thanks to all for their help.

Message I found that if I actually added the .dbf table to my layers (instead of browsing for the table in the xy data dialogue box)--that it worked fine and I was able to see the fields in the x and y drop-down fields. Maybe that will help some of you.

Message Several days ago, ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox all quit seeing .txt, .csv, or .tab files. All my ArcMap event themes (built over many months in ArcMap) grayed out and lost their source links. ArcView 3.2 still sees the tables and makes event themes from them just fine, and ArcGIS still sees .dbf files; so, I am not dead in the water.

Today I upgraded from ArcView 8.2 to 8.3, but the problem still persists! I bought the year of maintnenance, so I hope that within a year ESRI can squash the bug.

Message Has anything else on your system changed? A few possibilities to check:

1. OS Settings, Control Panel, Regional Options. Double check your
locale settings and the numbers. If you are using a locale other than
English are the number settings correct for the locale.

In ArcCatalog,
2. Tools, Options, General tab. Everything still checked?
3. File types tab. Any file types listed here? If so, try deleting them.

4. Maybe try registering the TextFileWorkspaceFactory .dll
I would have thought that installing 8.3 would have fixed this if
there's a problem with the dll.

Message 1. All appears OK. (However, I have never looked at that control panel before, so I am not sure what to expect.) Locale is USA, though.

2. Everything is still checked (including "Text files").
3. File types: None listed.

4. What does "registering the TextFileWorkspaceFactory .dll" mean? I will be happy to try it.

Text files still not recognized today. The only tables visible to ArcView 8.3 are .dbf files. (ArcView 3.2, WordPad, etc., still see .txt files, so I it's likely not a Windows problem.)

Many thanks,

David Fann

Message If you right click on the file name, are there Register/Unregister
listings? If so, select Register. A message will pop up which you'll
need to OK. If not, open a dos window in the ArcGIS bin directory.
Type "regsvr32 textfileworkspacefactory.dll".

I don't know if this will work; I'll clutching at straws.

Message Melita;

Regarding the problem of ArcCatalog and ArcMap not "seeing" the presence of .txt, .cvs, etc. files:

Have you ever gotten verification that the .dll registration had a positive effect?

It doesn't sound like David Fann (in this thread) applied it, but has anyone else that you may have helped, external to this forum?

Do you think the Windows XP Home operating system is a factor?

I have two distance education students who are having the problem described by David, above, and Alyssa, below in this thread.

They are running version 8.3 of ArcView. They both have applied SP3.

I've had them check the settings in ArcCatalog that you refer to above.
As well as the Control Panel settings you mention.

One of them has reinstalled the ArcGIS/ArcView software. His OpSys, etc., upgrades are up to date, too, as per Alyssa's posting below. (Do you have any idea which of what Alyssa did was the magic bullet?)

The only thing I have not had them do is the .dll registration that you mention.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you,
-jim

Message You know, I haven't thought about this problem for a while, because some time ago--I don't remember when or why--the Add XY Data tool began working again. I didn't even notice the change, and I don't recall doing anything that might have affected it. But, come to think of it, I haven't had to use ArcView 3 for event themes lately. ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox see .txt and .csv files OK now.

(Maybe one of the innumerable Windows updates made the difference.)

Not very helpful, is it?? Sorry! Good luck...

Message ArcMap can now add .csv files as xy data!

The following was done. (I am not sure which solved the problem.)
- Downloaded and installed all Windows updates.
- Downloaded and installed MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) 2.8 from the website below. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
- Downloaded and installed the latest versin of MSJet from the following URL.

Message I just had this happen to me. ArcMAp would not read a file with the extention .txt . The cause was having a .txt extention listed in the File Types in ArcCatalog (tools, options, filetypes). When you do this the 'Description of Type' defaults to Text Document. ArcMap needs it to read Text File. After some exploring some extentions just shouldn't be listed in FileTypes as they are automaticly read by arcCatalog and ArcMAp, txt being one of them. DBF, TIF, IMG, BIL are other extentions that don't need to be in File Types.

AND NOTHING WORKS... i cannot see any attributes to the data in the dropdown boxes

PLEASE PLEASE can someone help me.. currently i am having to import the xy data into arcview 3.2 and then saving so it opens into arcmap.. this is really annoying...

many thanks

Message Leigh,

Seems like you are doing everything right. Here are the steps I follow:

1) In EXCEL, make sure xy columns are near the left side of the spreadsheet - starting one column in from the left(don't ask me why this is important - seems to make a difference sometimes).

2) In EXCEL, select xy columns and format as numeric with two decimal places.

3) In EXCEL, make the upper left column active, and save as .dbf(IV) file.

4) Close EXCEL, saving all changes (as dbf (IV) format).

5) Open ArcCatalog and preview the file. You should be able to see all the contents. If not, right click on the file and select "properties" and look at the fields to see how the fields are formatted (i.e., the schema). It might be that the fields are not being formatted properly in EXCEL - this might give you some insight into the problem.

Good luck,
Craig

Message When I define and convert a latitude/longitude file to other projections, I need to keep 7-8 digits after the decimal points, then using add XY to bring into ArcMap. It works better when I define format for each column in EXCEL. But the maximum number of digits it will keep when you export it as DBF file is 6 (5 if exported from ACCESS). I haven't tried CSV yet.

Message I have noticed that arcgis is really sensitive when it comes to some things in a .txt file for adding xy data, what you should avoid is headings with strange characters like -/&%#% etc etc, also try to avoid comma (,) seperated text file since sometimes you perhaps wanna use a comma in the attribute, then its better with tab seperated files.

also if you try to convert something from microsoft products like excel for example, you MUST delete the last row (its a blank enter) otherwise it will not work. its a bitch when it is in that way, but when I talked to people at ESRI they told me it is also somewhat on microsofts board to fix this in their products, an solution simpler than anyting perhaps is to save tables in access or an personal geodatabase then I think it would work every time.

Message One subtlety still seems mysterious: As mentioned in my post of March 20, 2003, something caused ArcMap to stop seeing text files that had been working OK, as well as any new ones; existing event themes present in maps lost their source links and became greyed out in the TOC. So, something unknown changed to cause the problem in ArcMap (and ArcCatalog and ArcTookit), just as something else unknown later fixed it. I still have no clue in either case.

(BTW, I did try reregistering TextFileWorkspaceFactory.dll during troubleshooting, but that didn't help.)

Message I am having trouble with xy data that I have added. I think it is a projection issue, but I have not been able to solve it. I have lat/long data that I collected, these are water sampling station locations, that were originally collected in degree decimal minutes, that I have converted to decimal degrees using corpscom. I have been able to load the points, but they are showing up in approximately new jersey, when they should be in CT waters. The base layers that I am using are in NAD 1983 state plane CT FIPS 0600 feet. I don't know what I should be using as the coordinate system.

Any help would be appreciated!

Message Hi Kristin,

Make the longitude values negative. Then when you use the add xy data tool, set the coordinate system to NAD83. The data will be reprojected to the data frame's coordinate system (hopefully, NAD83 SPCS CT (feet)).

Also make sure that longitude = x and latitude = y.

You have one outlier that's off the coast of NJ: 057-08.9. Otherwise the data looks good to me. Make sure you set the coordinate system to NAD 1983, not a state plane zone. I tried that just to see, and the data ends up in Maryland.

I converted the results to a shapefile (still in NAD83) and attached it.

Message Problem solved!
You not only have to format your columns to number then 4 decimal places, your headings cannot have spaces and strange characters, and more importantly the title of you file needs to be short and contain no strange characters like !$^&^*$%$%#. Finally you have to select all the columns then save as a CSV file. Presto!
