Subject	Displaying SDE raster layers in Workstation

Message	We have a large layer of high resolution orthoimagery. It's stored as an SDE Raster layer. We would like to be able to display it in the background in Workstation Arcedit sessions (Solaris OS). Can it be done? I haven't found anything in the documentation that suggests this is supported.

Message	Hi Bob, This question was asked when ArcGIS was first released. Back then, the answer was "There are no plans to enhance workstation ArcInfo to provide this capability". To my knowledge this is still the case. Ray Carnes, ESRI Technical Marketing.

Message	Thanks Ray, That may not have been the answer I wanted, but it does answer the question! I don't want this to sound like a gripe session, but as an Arc user since 1991, I feel there are many operations that Workstation is better suited for than Desktop, and I think it's a mistake to de-emphisize the Workstation environment in new releases. Display of SDE rasters is one thing I'd like to see. Another thing I'd REALLY like to see in future releases is the ability to edit SDE data in Workstation/ArcEdit. Anyway, thanks for your help on this matter.

Message	Glad to help. Right now, all of ESRI’s development resources (i.e., new algorithms, new methods, and so forth) are being put into ArcGIS. I would really like you to contact ESRI development with feedback about which portions of the software you feel need improving in Desktop. If you feel workstation is better suited for certain tasks, it would be helpful for development to know which tasks and also how workstation provides a better user experience.
